Winnipeg Schools have TWO weeks to apply for FREE and Secure Bike Racks!
STUDENTS are being urged to Ride the Bike by offering FREE bike racks for schools. Green Action Centre wants them to become more active by taking the bike. The community benefits with more physical activity, congestion is reduced, calmer streets and neighbourhoods result and the air gets better.
The FREE racks would provide secure bike parking critical to encourage students to cycle to and from. The donation program is expected to offer an effective method for schools to promote active travel and help mom and dad feel comfortable about their kids taking their bikes.
Research shows cycling and walking as a means of transport has declined from 48% in 1969 to 13% in recent years. Sedentary lifestyles and dependence on the car is reflected by a dangerous increase in childhood diabetes. Green Action organizers want to help reverse the trend. Winnipeg schools have until April 27th to apply at http://www.greenactioncentre.ca . Schools which indicate a lack of adequate and secure bike storage will be chosen. Locally made racks from RackWorks will be awarded in early May!
