A special Canadian Salute for International Women’s Day
Just in time for International Women’s Day. A tribute from Historica Canada, to the most successful sports team in Canadian History , the Edmonton Commercial Grads women’s basketball team. From 1915 to 1940, the Grads were the National, North American and World Basketball Champions.
Their success was based on ditching the restrictive ‘ladies rules’ and playing the game just as men did. The women ranged from their late teens to their 40s also won an amazing 93% of their games. Historica Canada , which produces Heritage Minutes said it was a deliberate choice to feature the team on International Women’s day , as another set of role models for young women playing the game today. The new video, set in 1923 , shows the Grads challenging the Cleveland Favorite Knits for the World Championships. After just 2 games , the Grads won by a combined score of 53-33, marking the beginning of their reign. Now , let’s salute women everywhere with this short Historica Canada Minute!
