A NEW Journal promoting Girls to be active in sport, fitness and health for Winnipeg has hit the stands. Fitness Journal for Girls, is just out to help Winnipeg girls curb a national trend; Lack of participation in sport. Geared for girls 5 to 15, it’s a local magazine challenging them to try new sports and activities through-out Winnipeg. It’s all about a healthy lifestyle, increased self-esteem and a positive outlook on health.
Research discovered many disturbing trends!
Only 2% of girls aged 12 – 17 are getting enough physical activity to be healthy, yet nearly ALL parents report their kids are very physically active….. Childhood is the ideal time for developing the habit of regular physical activity, providing important health benefits when pursued through adulthood…… Surprisingly , Age 10 is the key! If a girl does not participate by the age of 10 there is only a 10% chance she will be physically active at the age of 25……… Mom’s participation in sport increases the rate of her child’s participation by 22%.……Girls have 1.3 million fewer opportunities to play high school sports than boys have ….Girls are up to 6 times more likely to drop out of sports than are boys by the age of 15…..High school female athletes have more positive body images than non-athletes!
