I love television and I watch a lot of it. I know what it’s like to blindly flip through Netflix looking for something to watch, so I decided to offer some recommendations to those of you looking for a new series.
LOVE (Comedy) Starring: Paul Rust (Comedy Bang! Bang!) and Gillian Jacobs (Community)
Love is a romantic comedy series produced by Judd Apatow about a down-to-earth look at dating. The writing is so natural and unexpected. It doesn’t glamorize relationships but there is a lot of heart to it.
SHAMELESS (US Version) (Comedy) Starring: William H Macy (Fargo) and Emmy Rossum (The Phantom of the Opera)
Shameless has been on for about 7 seasons but the first 5 just came out on Netflix. The show is about the dysfunctional family of alcoholic shyster Frank Gallagher, a single father of 6 kids. While he’s out getting into trouble the rest of the family is left to take care of themselves (and often times, him). The show is extremely raw with a great mix of drama and comedy.
CRASHING (Comedy) Starring: Pete Holmes (You Made It Weird Podcast)
Another show produced by Judd Apatow. Crashing is a show about an up and coming stand-up comedian whose wife cheats on him, so he’s forced to crash on the couch of a different comedian each episode. This is the only show on this list that’s not on Netflix (it’s on HBO) but it’s worth searching out.
BROADCHURCH (Drama, Mystery) Starring: David Tennant (Jessica Jones) and Olivia Colman (The Night Manager)
This is a British show about a murder investigation in a small town. The first season deals with a search for the killer of a young boy found on a beach. The second season is about the trial. A third season just started airing on Showcase about a completely different case. If you like a good murder mystery, it’s worth checking out.
BLACK MIRROR (Thriller, Drama) Starring: Jon Hamm (Mad Men) and Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurrassic World) (This show has a different cast each episode)
This show is kind of creepy…Every episode is a different story with a different cast, but each show shows the dark side of technology and its effect on society. Most episodes take place in the not-to-distant future and the thing that makes it scary is that any of these scenarios COULD happen.
