Imagine finding an old library book, deciding to do the right thing, and return it only to be handed a bill for $3650.00! That’s exactly what it would have cost Webb Johnson had the Sanfransisco Library held him accountable for the 10 cents/day fee that existed under their old system (the library has since capped late fees at $5). The book Webb returned had originally been checked out by his GREAT-Grandmother, Phoebe Webb, in 1917! The library elected not to charge Webb any fees upon the book’s return but the REAL kick of this story is that the 100 years late return is titled, “Forty Minutes Late”! 😀
Have you still got old library books kicking around?
